CBIZ Talent Solutions is assisting the Stowers Institute for Medical Research in their search for a Chief Technology Officer (CTO) in Kansas City, Missouri.

As a key member of the executive leadership team, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) will provide strategic leadership for enterprise technology, research computing, artificial intelligence initiatives, cybersecurity, data platforms, and digital transformation across the organization. This executive will partner closely with scientific and administrative leaders to ensure technology capabilities support the Institute’s scientific mission while enabling operational excellence, scalability, and innovation.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute a multi-year technology and AI strategy aligned with the Institute’s scientific and operational priorities.
- Serve as a strategic advisor to executive leadership on emerging technologies, digital innovation, AI capabilities, and technology-related risks.
- Establish governance frameworks for responsible AI, data stewardship, and enterprise technology investments.
- Lead advanced research computing capabilities, including high-performance computing, large-scale storage, scientific applications, and data visualization platforms.
- Partner with scientific leaders, researchers, and data science teams to identify and support high-impact AI and analytics initiatives.
- Enable secure collection, management, analysis, and sharing of complex scientific datasets across research programs.
- Oversee enterprise applications supporting finance, human resources, facilities, communications, knowledge management, and other business functions.
- Drive digital transformation initiatives that improve operational effectiveness, user experience, and service delivery.
- Develop and implement enterprise analytics and reporting capabilities that support strategic decision-making.
- Lead and continuously enhance cybersecurity, privacy, disaster recovery, business continuity, and technology risk management programs.
- Establish strong IT governance practices, service level standards, and performance metrics across the organization.
- Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing technology organization encompassing infrastructure, cybersecurity, applications, research computing, and data platforms.
- Develop organizational capabilities in cloud technologies, AI, data engineering, and emerging technologies.
- Manage technology budgets, vendor relationships, managed services partners, and strategic technology investments.
- Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, collaboration, transparency, and customer service throughout the technology organization.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field strongly preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive leadership experience within information technology or related disciplines.
- Proven success developing and executing enterprise technology strategies.
- Demonstrated experience leading technology transformation and organizational change initiatives.
- Deep understanding of enterprise infrastructure, cloud architectures, cybersecurity, enterprise applications, data governance, analytics, and AI/ML platforms.
- Experience managing complex technology environments supporting diverse stakeholder groups.
- Strong financial and business acumen, including budget management, vendor management, and technology portfolio planning.
- Exceptional communication, collaboration, and relationship-building skills with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
- Ability to translate complex technical concepts into practical business solutions and strategic recommendations.
- Experience building, developing, and retaining high-performing technology teams.
- Curiosity, adaptability, and enthusiasm for leveraging technology to advance scientific discovery and organizational impact.
